Event: TEDGlobal 2011
Speaker: Jeremy Gilley, Peace Activist
Bio: Filmmaker Jeremy Gilley founded Peace One Day to create an annual day without conflict. And … it’s happening. What will you do to make peace on September 21?
The speaker is asking us:
“I was basically concerned about what was going on in the world. I couldn’t understand the starvation, the destruction, the killing of innocent people.”
Do WE understand? If you do understand, how can you rest until things are resolved? If no, are you human? Or do you think, you are NOT qualified? The speaker introduces himself:
“I was bottom of the class. I haven’t got any qualifications. I was told I was dyslexic.”
Whatever your qualifications or whatever resources you have or do NOT have, you have a responsibility. The speaker quotes Frank Barnaby:
” … that all sectors of society had a responsibility to try and progress things and move things forward.”
Now, wait a minute! We ALL love to say “I am doing my bit. I give employment. I spend. I pay taxes. I donate to my favorite NGO”. I have BAD NEWS for you! You have been TRULY NOBLE. But, it was NOT ENOUGH! Our Titanic is sinking.
So, let us STOP TALKING about doing our bits! Let us take the challenge to say “I AM DOING ALL THAT IT TAKES TO SOLVE THIS, AND, I WILL NOT STOP UNTIL THIS GETS SORTED”.
How does ONE DEAL with such an infinite responsibility? It is simple actually, here is a simple TWO-STEP GAME PLAN:
STEP #1 CHOOSE YOUR NUMBER #1 ART / SKILL / STRENGTH / WHAT YOU LOVE DOING (To begin with, eliminate everything, choose ONLY ONE. Later, other skills could be useful too).
STEP #2 CHOSE YOUR NUMBER #1 PATH on how you would like to make a difference and then IMAGINE THE BIGGEST POSSIBLE PROJECT out of it. Call it your I-AM-POSSIBLE PROJECT or your own personal MOONSHOT).
Jeremy Gilley, the speaker shares:
But I realized that, having been messing around with structure as an actor, that a series of sound bites in itself wasn’t enough, that there needed to be a mountain to climb, there needed to be a journey that I had to take. And if I took that journey, no matter whether it failed or succeeded, it would be completely irrelevant.*
As easy as that. Choose your Superpower. Declare your Moonshot.
As the famous saying goes, ‘If not us, who? And if not now, when?’
As to HOW Gilley pulled-off his moonshot, please do listen to the talk:
