Entrepreneurs desperately desire to produce “Astonishing Results”. Many methods and tools are available to achieve great results – for example, Sociocracy, Holacracy, Teal, Lean, Agile and so on!
One could argue that a core part of all these methods is simply to find ways to achieve “empowerment” across the organization – though, one must admit, the word “empowerment” is such an overused term that we have probably forgotten what it means!
The three keys to empowerment (from the authors’ earlier book FROM EMPOWERMENT TAKES MORE THAN A MINUTE) are:
Key #1: Share information with everyone (Similar to what Ray Dalio calls “radical transparency”)
Key #2: Create autonomy through boundaries (Similar to how Sociocracy creates Circles through Double Linking)
Key #3: Teams become the hierarchy (Self-Directed teams instead of traditional hierarchies)
This is an “impossible” dream for most companies. I mean, do you the have guts to share information, give autonomy and make your teams self-directed?
Mostly the answer is “No” due to a variety of reasons like sensitive information concerns, incompetency in team, lack of leadership, etc.
So what is the case for enabling empowerment in organizations? There are many “profitable” reasons – however the main case is that you cannot survive in this VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) world without an empowered organization!
